Where it came from
Stab was released in 2024 as part of the Foundations set for Magic: The Gathering. As a core set release, Foundations was designed to serve as an accessible entry point for new players while providing a stable foundation for the game's various formats, reintroducing classic mechanics and thematic staples that define the black color identity within the game's color pie.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the game are known for their atmospheric and emotive quality. The design intent behind Stab was to provide a straightforward, efficient removal spell that captures the essence of black mana's ruthless utility, reflecting a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes clarity and mechanical function for newer players.
