Where it came from
Stab Wound was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Return to Ravnica in 2012, designed as a common enchantment that functions as a slow-acting removal spell. Within the game's mechanics, it represents a lingering injury that drains the health of a creature and its controller over time, fitting the themes of the Golgari Swarm on the plane of Ravnica.
The Enchanting Tales version, numbered 36 in the Wilds of Eldraine set, features new, thematic artwork created by illustrator Jason Rainville. Released in 2023 as part of a bonus sheet of reprints, this version adopts the storybook-inspired aesthetic of the Eldraine setting, reimagining the card’s grim, visceral effect through the lens of a dark fairy tale fable.
