Where it came from
The Staff of Compleation was released in early 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card, bearing the collector number 242s, features the unique 'Step-and-Compleat' foil treatment, a stylistic choice intended to represent the invasive, glistening oil-based corruption of the Phyrexians, the primary antagonists of the set. The design concept focuses on the biomechanical aesthetic of New Phyrexia, reflecting a narrative turning point where the multiverse faces the threat of total conversion into inorganic, machine-like life forms.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has been a consistent contributor to the game’s visual identity. Kieryluk was tasked with rendering an object that conveys both immense power and a sense of unnatural, creeping dread. The feedback within the community focused on the card's utility as an artifact that mirrors the set's core mechanics of proliferation, and its aesthetic design was widely praised for successfully capturing the alien, cold, and calculated nature of the Phyrexian faction.
