Where it came from
The Staff of the Storyteller is a card originally featured in the Magic: The Gathering 'Secret Lair' series, specifically released as part of the 'Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' drop. This collection was produced in 2023 to coincide with the theatrical release of the film, designed to celebrate the rich lore and collaborative spirit of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise within the Magic: The Gathering card game framework.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who sought to capture the whimsical yet powerful essence of a wandering bard or chronicler. The design highlights the narrative focus of the film's source material, emphasizing the connection between storytelling and magical utility. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its thematic resonance and its mechanical utility within white-aligned deck builds, serving as a functional piece of modern game design that honors classic tabletop tropes.
