Where it came from
Stairs to Infinity was released in 2012 as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering Planechase 2012 set. Designed as a planar card rather than a traditional playing card, it was distributed during the release events to showcase the unique mechanics of the Planechase format, which adds a chaotic, shifting landscape element to standard matches.
The artwork for the piece was illustrated by Kev Walker, whose long-standing contribution to the game is characterized by dark, atmospheric, and highly detailed fantasy aesthetic. The design depicts a surreal, spiraling architectural structure that emphasizes the card's function, which involves unpredictable movement through the game's deck, and it was generally well-received by players for its ability to increase the complexity and flavor of multiplayer sessions.
