Where it came from
Released in the Invasion expansion for Magic: The Gathering in October 2000, Stand // Deliver is a split card designed to represent the invasion of the plane of Dominaria by the Phyrexians. This set was notable for introducing the split card mechanic, which provided players with a choice between two distinct spells on a single card, reflecting the dual nature of strategic flexibility during the conflict depicted in the game's lore.
The artwork for the card was created by Greg Staples, who utilized a distinct, moody aesthetic to contrast the two halves of the card. The design was intended to evoke the mechanical divide between defensive and aggressive tactics, a hallmark of the Invasion set's design philosophy that sought to emphasize player agency during the high-stakes narrative of the Phyrexian war.
