Where it came from
Startling Development was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore a world dominated by gargantuan monsters, featuring mechanics that focused on mutation and evolution. This specific card was crafted as a common-rarity blue spell, intended to provide players with a utility tool for card filtering and creature modification, mirroring the set's broader themes of unexpected transformation.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has been a frequent contributor to the game’s aesthetic for many years. His design for this piece captures the frantic energy of the Ikoria setting, focusing on the moment a creature undergoes an abrupt and chaotic mutation. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if modest, inclusion in Limited formats, where its ability to cycle through a deck while buffing a creature provided players with tactical flexibility during tense matches.
