Where it came from
Staunch Defenders was released as part of the Friday Night Magic promotional series in the year 2000. These cards were distributed to local game stores to be awarded as prizes to participants in weekly casual tournaments, a program designed by Wizards of the Coast to foster community engagement and reward loyal players of Magic: The Gathering.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early illustrators. His style often emphasized high-fantasy motifs, and for this piece, he aimed to depict the resilience of armored sentinels. While the card itself is a reprint of an earlier mechanical design, the foil finish exclusive to this promotion made it a sought-after aesthetic upgrade for collectors and players during that era.
