Stave Off

Stave Off was released in the Magic 2012 core set, which debuted in July 2011 as part of Wizards of the Coast's annual refresh of the Magic: The Gathering base game. This card represents a mechanical staple within white's color identity, providing a low-cost, instant-speed method to grant protection from a color to a target creature, a utility effect that has appeared in various forms throughout the game's history to facilitate tactical defense or evasion.

The artwork for this particular printing was created by artist Daarken, known for his dramatic and often dark fantasy aesthetic. His illustration captures the essence of the spell by showing a figure channeling a barrier of light to deflect an incoming threat. Within the broader context of competitive play during the 2012 cycle, the card was regarded as a versatile tool for Limited formats, where the ability to protect a key creature from removal or circumvent enemy blockers proved highly effective in maintaining board presence.
