Where it came from
Steeling Stance was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension set, the final expansion in the Ravnica: City of Guilds block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to complete the cycle of the ten two-color guilds, with this particular card representing the Boros Legion, known for its rigid, militaristic structure and commitment to justice through combat. It serves as a mechanical reflection of the Boros philosophy, offering a combat trick that reinforces the guild’s signature aggressive playstyle.
The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a renowned fantasy and science fiction artist celebrated for his extensive work in the Star Wars universe. Dorman’s design for the card captures a moment of intense fortification, depicting a Boros soldier mid-battle, maintaining a resolute posture. The illustration emphasizes the raw intensity and armored aesthetic that defined the Boros visual identity during the Ravnica block, and it was received by players as a functional, flavor-aligned common card typical of the set's high-synergy design goals.
