Where it came from
Steward of Solidarity was released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, a set that served as the dark conclusion to the Amonkhet block. The card captures the brutal, industrial theology of the plane, where the God-Pharaoh Nicol Bolas reclaims his engineered society. It represents a initiate of the trials, designed to embody the set's central mechanic of exerting to gain a temporary advantage at the cost of being unable to untap, reflecting the exhaustion and sacrifice inherent in the set's lore.
The artwork was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Kieryluk focused on the stoic, disciplined aesthetic of the Amonkhet initiates, emphasizing the golden, ritualistic armor and the sun-drenched, desert environment of the plane. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, low-cost white creature that became a staple in limited formats and niche white-weenie constructed archetypes for its ability to generate multiple bodies for combat.
