Steward of Valeron

Steward of Valeron was first released as part of the Shards of Alara expansion in 2008, designed to represent the Bant shard’s emphasis on honorable combat and cooperation. This specific version originates from the URL/Convention Promos series, a collection of promotional cards distributed at large-scale Magic: The Gathering events or through official digital campaigns to generate excitement for new sets and gameplay mechanics.

The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, who sought to capture the regal, knightly aesthetic characteristic of the Bant plane. By depicting the Steward with a focus on grace and defensive posture, the design reflects the color identity of Green and White, emphasizing the synergy between mana production and creature combat. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency as a mana-accelerating creature, becoming a staple in various aggressive and midrange deck archetypes during its tenure in competitive play.
