Provenance

Where it came from

Stifle was first released in 2003 as part of the Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering, the third set in the Onslaught block. Designed to interact with the game's increasingly complex activated and triggered abilities, the card provided players with a powerful, low-cost utility tool that could negate effects that were previously difficult to address, such as fetch-land activations or storm triggers.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who employed a clean, dramatic style to capture the essence of a spell designed to bring sudden cessation to a chaotic magical effect. Upon its release, Stifle was initially viewed as a niche sideboard card, but its strategic depth and ability to shift the tempo of competitive play eventually established it as a cornerstone of the Legacy and Vintage formats.
