Stoic Angel

Stoic Angel was originally introduced in the Shards of Alara set in 2008, designed as a rare creature for the Bant shard, which emphasizes harmony, vigilance, and group tactics. The card features art by Greg Staples, who rendered the angel in a style consistent with the knightly, armored aesthetic of the Bant plane. The card’s mechanical design—limiting each player to attacking or blocking with only one creature—was intended to force a slower, more deliberate pace of gameplay, reflecting the disciplined nature of the Bant soldiers.

The 2017 Modern Masters printing served as a reprint for the Modern format, providing players with easier access to older cards that had become staples in niche control decks. This version retained the original illustration by Greg Staples, maintaining a visual consistency with the card's debut. Upon its release in 2017, the card was received as a niche utility piece, appreciated by players who favored taxing effects and defensive board states, even if it did not become a dominant force in the broader competitive meta.
