Where it came from
Stony Silence was originally introduced in the Innistrad set in 2011, designed as a powerful enchantment to suppress artifacts in competitive Magic: The Gathering formats. By the time it was reprinted in Modern Masters 2017, the card had solidified its status as a staple sideboard tool. The 2017 release aimed to provide players with accessible versions of high-demand staples, with this printing featuring artwork by Johannes Voss that emphasizes the card's theme of magical containment.
The illustration by Johannes Voss depicts a serene yet imposing crystalline structure, reflecting the card's function of rendering artifacts useless. The design approach focuses on visual clarity, ensuring players could easily identify the card's purpose during fast-paced games. The Modern Masters 2017 release was well-received for its curated selection of reprints, which helped stabilize the availability of key functional cards for the Modern format.
