Where it came from
Stonybrook Banneret was released in 2008 as part of the Morningtide expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the synergy between different creature types and tribal mechanics, specifically highlighting classes like Soldiers, Warriors, Wizards, and Rogues. As a Merfolk Wizard, the Banneret was designed to lower the casting cost of other Wizards and Merfolk, serving as a classic utility creature that rewarded players for building a thematically cohesive deck during the Lorwyn-Morningtide block.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who rendered the Banneret as an amphibious, robed figure wielding a crystalline staff. Moeller’s design captures the mystical and scholarly aesthetic of the Merfolk within the set’s idyllic yet strange setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in tempo-based decks, becoming a staple component in Merfolk-tribal configurations that prioritized low-mana curves and board presence.
