Where it came from
Storm Front was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce mechanics like buyback and shadow, aiming to expand the strategic depth of the game during its early growth period. The card itself represents a common-tier green spell designed to provide situational creature removal by allowing a player to deal damage to a flying creature based on the power of a creature they control.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic artists from the game’s formative years. Rush was known for his distinct, painterly style that helped define the visual identity of Magic in the nineties. His design for Storm Front utilized naturalistic, dramatic lighting to depict the intensity of a weather-based assault, consistent with the thematic emphasis on elemental and atmospheric magic found throughout the Tempest set.
