Where it came from
Storm Herd was originally introduced as a rare card in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering set Eventide. It represents the set's focus on hybrid mana mechanics, specifically the synergy between blue and black mana, reflecting the twilight-themed setting of Shadowmoor. The card design leans into the thematic duality of the Shadowmoor plane, where the environment shifts between states of light and darkness.
The artwork, illustrated by Dave Kendall, captures the brooding, ethereal aesthetic characteristic of the Eventide expansion. Kendall utilized a dark, atmospheric palette to emphasize the card's function as a creature-generating spell. When included in 'The List'—a curated selection of cards from throughout Magic's history reprinted in newer booster packs—it serves to introduce players to the unique mechanics of the Shadowmoor block.
