Where it came from
Stormkeld Vanguard, featuring its reverse side Bear Down, was released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set Wilds of Eldraine. The card belongs to the set’s focus on the fairy-tale inspired plane of Eldraine, utilizing the mechanic of roles to represent the magical enchantments inherent to the setting. As an uncommon green card, it was designed to bolster the set's draft environment, offering players utility through its flexible card type and combat-focused abilities.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrative artist Jason Rainville, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering library. Rainville sought to capture the rugged, primal aesthetic of the Eldraine wilderness through the character’s design, emphasizing the connection between the vanguard and the savage strength represented by the Bear Down ability. Upon release, the card was received as a solid, functional piece of limited play equipment, consistent with the set's thematic emphasis on growth and physical endurance.
