Where it came from
Strength of Cedars was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Japanese mythology and folklore, shifting the game's aesthetic away from Western high fantasy toward a Shinto-inspired spirit realm. As a green common card, it served as a functional piece of the set's Limited environment, designed to represent the resilience and spiritual growth central to the block's themes.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's history, best known for his original depiction of Black Lotus. His design for this card utilizes earthy tones and organic lines to evoke the ancient, life-sustaining nature of the Jukai Forest. While the card is not considered a competitive staple, it remains a nostalgic inclusion for players who appreciate the distinct, atmospheric art direction of the Kamigawa block.
