Where it came from
Sue, Everlasting Dinosaur (RZ06e) was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering card game, specifically serving as a guest inclusion within the Universes Beyond range. The card depicts the famous Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton specimen housed at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. By featuring this specific paleontological icon, the designers sought to bridge the gap between historical scientific discovery and the game's fantasy mechanics, utilizing the creature's notoriety as a centerpiece for the card's theme of resilience.
The art and design were developed to honor the legacy of the real-world Sue specimen, which was discovered in 1990 by Sue Hendrickson. The illustration focuses on the skeletal structure and imposing stature of the fossil, aiming to evoke a sense of awe that aligns with the dinosaur's status as the most complete T. rex skeleton ever recovered. Upon its release, the card was received warmly by the community as a unique collector's piece that elevated the profile of museum-related educational content within the hobby.
