Where it came from
Sun Quan, Lord of Wu was originally released in the 1999 Portal Three Kingdoms set, which was designed to introduce the history of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms to the English-speaking market. The card features the leader of the Wu kingdom, known for his naval prowess, and the design centers around the unique 'horsemanship' mechanic. This keyword ability serves as a thematic representation of the cavalry-focused warfare of the period, making creatures with the ability nearly impossible for ground-based armies to block.
The Commander Masters version, numbered 498, retains the original mechanical identity while introducing updated card frame aesthetics. The illustration honors the historical figure through a traditional artistic lens, reflecting the legacy of the original Portal Three Kingdoms release. While the original set was initially considered niche due to its limited distribution, the character has since gained significant appreciation among players for his tactical utility in the Commander format, where the evasion provided by horsemanship remains a powerful strategic tool.
