Provenance

Where it came from

Sunblast Angel was originally released in the 2010 expansion Scars of Mirrodin and later reprinted in the 2011 Duel Decks: Venser vs. Koth, where it bears the collector number 21. The card was designed to embody the themes of the Mirrodin block, reflecting the setting's conflict between organic life and the mechanical Phyrexians. Its mechanic, which destroys all tapped creatures upon entering the battlefield, was intended to serve as a powerful board-control tool for white-aligned decks during the set's standard environment.

The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a long-time contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Briclot focused on a celestial aesthetic that emphasized light and divine intervention, distinguishing the angel from the darker, corrupted designs found elsewhere in the Scars of Mirrodin cycle. The card was well-received by players for its tactical utility and remains a notable inclusion in the Duel Decks series for its ability to shift the momentum of a game when played at the right moment.
