What it does
Destroy target land. Its controller may search their library for a basic land card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle. Creatures without flying can't block this turn.

Where it came from
Sundering Eruption // Volcanic Fissure was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed specifically for the Modern format, the set focused on introducing powerful, complex mechanical interactions that cater to long-term players. This card serves as a dual-faced land-spell, a design philosophy that offers players increased utility by allowing them to choose between playing the card as a resource or utilizing its spell effect depending on the board state.
The artwork, created by illustrator Simon Dominic, emphasizes the raw, destructive power inherent to red-aligned magic within the game. The visual narrative centers on the violent displacement of terrain, aligning with the card's function of dealing damage to creatures and planeswalkers while also acting as a source of red mana. Like many entries in the Modern Horizons series, it was received as a highly efficient tool for aggressive deck archetypes, prized for the versatility granted by its modal nature.
