Provenance

Where it came from

Sungrass Prairie was originally released in the Odyssey expansion in 2001, designed as part of a cycle of lands that provide two colors of mana by sacrificing themselves. The card is a mechanical representation of the diverse mana sources found across the plane of Dominaria, specifically the fertile, sun-drenched regions. This particular iteration was reprinted in 2018 for Commander Anthology Volume II, a curated collection intended to bring popular preconstructed decks and staple cards back into circulation for a new generation of players.

The artwork for this version was provided by Ron Spencer, a veteran illustrator known for his distinctive, high-contrast style that often highlights the raw energy of Magic: The Gathering's landscapes. In designing the visual aesthetic of the Prairie, Spencer leaned into the bright, airy sensibilities of the setting, creating an image that conveys both tranquility and the utility required for complex deck building. The reprint was well-received by the Commander community, as it provided an accessible way to acquire a utility land that remains a consistent choice for dual-colored green-white decks.
