Provenance

Where it came from

Sungrass Prairie was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Odyssey expansion set in 2001. As part of a cycle of lands known as the 'Odyssey filter lands,' it was designed to provide mana flexibility for decks playing multiple colors, specifically green and white. These cards were created to help players navigate the mana-heavy demands of the early 2000s competitive environment by allowing them to convert generic mana into colored mana during the mid-to-late game.

The version from the Forgotten Realms Commander set features updated artwork by Alayna Danner, who was commissioned to reimagine the location within the context of the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Danner's illustration focuses on the sweeping, vibrant vistas typical of the plane of Toril, moving away from the more generic fantasy aesthetic of the original printing. Her work was well-received for bringing a distinct sense of place and scale to a card that had previously lacked a deep narrative identity.
