Where it came from
Supreme Will originated in the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2017. Designed as an instant-speed card selection tool, it reflects the set's theme of tactical preparation amidst the apocalyptic events on the plane of Amonkhet. Mechanically, it builds upon the tradition of impulse-style card advantage, offering players a choice between digging deep into their library or finding a specific answer, balancing versatility with the inherent risks of discarding the unchosen cards.
The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned illustrator in the fantasy gaming space. Villeneuve sought to capture the essence of a strategic mental maneuver, utilizing lighting and composition to convey the gravity of a 'supreme' decision. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and flexible role in control and combo archetypes, eventually earning a reprint in The List, a curated selection of cards that appear in modern booster packs to celebrate the history of the game.
