Where it came from
Surge of Brilliance is a card from the Magic: The Gathering Doctor Who Commander set, released in 2023 to celebrate the long-running British science fiction series. The card features an illustration by artist Viko Menezes, who captures a dynamic, stylized interpretation of the Doctor's intellectual intensity. It was designed to mechanically represent the quick-witted, problem-solving nature of the Doctor within the game's ruleset, fitting into the 'Blast from the Past' deck.
As part of a Universes Beyond collaboration, the set was aimed at bridging the gap between tabletop gaming fans and Doctor Who enthusiasts. The card's aesthetic leans into the show's vibrant, whimsical tone while maintaining the traditional high-fantasy art style found in Magic: The Gathering. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of both franchises for its thematic integration, serving as an effective utility card that rewards players for casting spells related to the Doctor's various incarnations.
