Provenance

Where it came from

Svogthos, the Restless Tomb was first introduced in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds set, representing the guildhall of the Golgari Swarm. It was later reprinted as card number 81 in the 2012 Duel Decks: Izzet vs. Golgari, a product designed to showcase the mechanical contrast between the chaotic, spell-focused Izzet League and the graveyard-centric, decomposition-themed Golgari. The card design itself, a land that can transform into a creature, mechanically mirrors the Golgari's core philosophy of recycling the dead to fuel future growth.

The original illustration was created by artist Rick Sardinha, who focused on the gothic, subterranean atmosphere of the Ravnican undercity. The imagery depicts a moss-covered, imposing structure that feels both architectural and organic, effectively capturing the duality of a location that is simultaneously a tomb and a living force. Upon its release, players recognized the card as a persistent, difficult-to-remove threat in control-oriented graveyard decks, solidifying its place in the history of Ravnica-themed gameplay.
