Where it came from
Swallowed by Leviathan is a card featured in the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, which debuted in 2011 to capitalize on the enduring popularity of Square Enix’s flagship role-playing franchise. This card draws directly from the series' recurring motif of the legendary water summon, Leviathan, typically depicted as a massive sea serpent. The design reflects the tactical, turn-based nature of the game, utilizing iconic imagery from the franchise’s history to evoke nostalgia while serving as a functional component in deck-building strategies.
The artwork for cards in this series is curated to maintain visual consistency with the diverse aesthetic styles spanning decades of Final Fantasy titles. By featuring classic summon mechanics, the card provides players with a bridge between the digital experience of the video games and the physical collection space. It was received as a staple utility card within the water-element decks, valued by players for its ability to manipulate the board state and represent the powerful influence of Leviathan within the game’s meta.
