Provenance

Where it came from

Swarm, Being of Bees made its first appearance in Champions #14, published in 1977. Created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist John Byrne, the character originated from the strange concept of a Nazi scientist, Fritz von Meyer, whose consciousness was integrated into a colony of radioactive bees after a failed experiment involving a meteor. This bizarre premise reflected the experimental and often surreal tone of late-1970s Marvel comics, where creators frequently pushed the boundaries of traditional supervillain archetypes.

The visual design of Swarm centers on the grotesque imagery of a skeletal figure composed entirely of a swirling, stinging mass of insects. John Byrne’s illustration for the character was designed to evoke a sense of uncanny horror, moving away from the conventional costumed villain toward a more eldritch threat. Over the decades, the character has become a cult favorite among readers for its unique aesthetic and inherently unsettling nature, leading to its inclusion in various trading card sets, including the Marvel's Spider-Man series where it holds the collector number 69.
