Where it came from
The Sword of Truth and Justice was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons expansion, a set specifically designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without requiring them to pass through standard rotation. This item serves as the fifth entry in the iconic 'Sword of' cycle, a series of artifact equipment cards that represent legendary weaponry from the history of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design team created this card to provide players with a powerful tool for creature-based strategies, utilizing the protection mechanics and triggered effects that define the legacy of its predecessors.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a vibrant, ethereal aesthetic to capture the dual themes of truth and justice. Voss focused on a design that felt both regal and imposing, emphasizing the shimmering light and clean lines associated with the card's color identity in the game's lore. Upon its release, the card was widely received by competitive players for its utility in disrupting opponent board states and providing card advantage, securing its place as a staple in various deck archetypes within the Modern format.
