What it does
For the River Heralds, the Immortal Sun is an object of terror and devastation. The idea that anyone would retrieve it for their own use is utterly abhorrent.

Where it came from
Sworn Guardian was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common-rarity artifact creature, it was designed to support the set's central themes of exploration and Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics. Mechanically, it serves as a defensive wall, reflecting the set's narrative focus on the Sun Empire’s sentinel-like constructs tasked with protecting the golden city of Orazca from interlopers.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who rendered the guardian with a stony, ancient texture that aligns with the set's Ixalan plane design guidelines. The visual language emphasizes a balance between rigid structural stone and the vibrant, overgrown nature characteristic of the block. Upon its release, the card was generally viewed as a utilitarian draft inclusion, praised by players for its ability to stabilize the board during the limited gameplay format typical of the era.
