Where it came from
Taigam's Scheming was released in 2014 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Khans of Tarkir. The card depicts a moment from the timeline where the character Taigam, a former student of the Jeskai Way, abandons his teachings to pursue forbidden knowledge under the tutelage of the dragonlord Silumgar. This narrative shift serves as a pivotal bridge between the timeline's two major versions of the character.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who captured the stoic and methodical nature of the character as he manipulates his library. The design focuses on the 'scry' and 'mill' mechanics inherent to blue-aligned control decks of that era. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its utility in graveyard-focused strategies and its contribution to the deeper world-building of the Tarkir plane.
