Where it came from
Tainted Remedy was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins set, which served as a narrative bridge exploring the origin stories of five core Planeswalker characters. The card was designed to function as a hoser—a card specifically intended to punish life-gain strategies—by inverting the mechanic so that any life a player would gain instead causes them to lose that same amount of life. This design reflects the darker, more parasitic themes often found in black-aligned Magic cards, focusing on subverting the opponent's resources.
The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific concept artist known for his significant contributions to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Briclot’s illustration captures a chilling, visceral scene that complements the card's function, emphasizing the corruption of healing magic. Upon its release, it was received as a niche but effective sideboard tool for eternal formats like Modern, where players frequently employ decks that rely on gaining large amounts of life to survive.
