Where it came from
Takenuma is a legendary swamp card featured as part of the Planechase 2012 release, a set designed to introduce players to the chaotic, multidimensional nature of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Released in mid-2012, this set focused on iconic locations from the game's lore, with Takenuma representing the dark, marshy landscape of the Kamigawa plane. It was crafted to provide players with a unique environment card that alters the rules of play, simulating the specific influence of the location on a match.
The card features evocative artwork by Adam Paquette, who captured the atmospheric, eerie beauty associated with the feudal-inspired aesthetic of Kamigawa. Paquette’s design emphasizes the moody, overgrown nature of the swamp, aiming to translate the card's mechanical utility into a visual narrative. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the community for its ability to enhance the Planechase format, offering a distinct sense of place and strategy that set it apart from standard land cards.
