Where it came from
The Talisman of Hierarchy was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a supplemental product designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format. This card is part of a cycle of 'Talisman' artifacts that provide mana acceleration while offering the flexibility to damage the player in exchange for colored mana. The set drew heavily from the lore and aesthetic of Dungeons & Dragons, specifically the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, to provide cards that feel distinct from the typical high-fantasy themes of Magic: The Gathering.
The artwork for this specific iteration was provided by illustrator Simon Dominic, who sought to capture the ecclesiastical and rigid nature of the hierarchy represented by the item. By utilizing ornate, gold-laden motifs, the design aims to convey a sense of power and structure associated with the political systems within Baldur's Gate. Upon release, the card was received as a functional staple for Commander players utilizing the Orzhov, or white-black, color identity, praised for its efficiency in maintaining tempo during early-game plays.
