Where it came from
Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student was released in the Modern Horizons 3 set in 2024, serving as a reimagining of a prominent Planeswalker character from Magic: The Gathering lore. This double-faced card depicts Tamiyo during her formative years as a student on Kamigawa, reflecting the set's focus on powerful, high-impact cards designed for modern formats. Its design, featuring an evolving transformation mechanic, was crafted to evoke the scholarly journey of the character before her eventual ascent to the status of a seasoned planeswalker.
The 242s promotional version, often identified as the 'Profile' or 'Borderless' treatment, features stylized, portrait-oriented artwork intended to highlight the character's intellectual essence. The illustration style adopted for these promos represents a shift toward more cinematic and character-focused aesthetic choices, aiming to appeal to collectors who value distinct, visually striking versions of iconic characters. Upon release, the card saw immediate play in competitive formats due to its versatility and ability to generate card advantage early in the game.
