Provenance

Where it came from

Tandem Lookout was originally released in the Avacyn Restored expansion in 2012, designed to synergize with the set's focus on creatures with soulbond abilities. This mechanic encouraged players to pair creatures together to share powerful benefits, reflecting the set’s narrative theme of cooperation against the encroaching darkness of Innistrad. The card was later reprinted as part of the 2016 Duel Decks: Blessed vs. Cursed product, which pitted the theme of angelic protection against the horror-inspired mechanics of the undead.

The artwork for Tandem Lookout was created by illustrator Matt Stewart. In his design, Stewart sought to capture the vigilant, supernatural nature of the creature, depicting a celestial scout surveying the landscape. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in card advantage strategies, particularly in the Commander format, where its ability to draw cards whenever a paired creature deals combat damage remains a staple for blue-aligned decks.
