Tandem Tactics

Tandem Tactics was released in 2015 as part of the Battle for Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to highlight the set's central 'Ally' mechanic, which encouraged players to build boards of cooperative creatures that triggered synergistic abilities when entering the battlefield. The design reflects the high-stakes, adventurous tone of the Zendikar plane, where survival depends on the cooperation of diverse species against the threat of the Eldrazi.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who sought to capture a dynamic moment of combat coordination. Voss utilized a bright, clean aesthetic to emphasize the camaraderie and strategic timing required for the spell to function effectively. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players in the Limited format, where it became a staple defensive tool for white-aligned decks due to its versatility in both protecting creatures and swinging combat outcomes.
