Where it came from
Target Minotaur was released in 2017 as part of Unstable, the third 'un-set' for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, these sets are intentionally humorous and experimental, featuring mechanics that break the traditional rules of the game to provide a lighthearted experience for players. The set was conceived as a way for the design team to explore unconventional creative spaces that do not fit into the standard competitive tournament environment.
The card was illustrated by artist Matt Cavotta, who has a long-standing history with the game. The design leans into the absurd premise of the set, featuring a minotaur attempting to use a target symbol from a shooting range as a fashion accessory. It was received by the community as a quintessential example of the self-aware, pun-driven humor that defines the un-set experience, cementing its place as a playful piece of Magic: The Gathering lore.
