Provenance

Where it came from

Taught by Serra is a promotional card originating from the early days of the Magic: The Gathering organized play circuit, specifically produced for the 1996 World Championship event. As a specialized card that does not belong to a standard expansion set, it represents a period when Wizards of the Coast experimented with exclusive, limited-distribution rewards for tournament participants and staff, emphasizing the prestige of high-level competitive play.

The card features artwork by veteran fantasy illustrator Christopher Rush, who was instrumental in defining the visual aesthetic of the game's earliest years. The design leans into the thematic lore of Serra, a central figure in the game's multiverse, capturing an ethereal and instructional tone. While the card is not legal for tournament play due to its unique mechanics and limited release, it remains a sought-after piece for enthusiasts of the game's history and collectors of promotional rarities.
