Tavern Ruffian // Tavern Smasher

Tavern Ruffian // Tavern Smasher is a double-faced creature card from the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The set draws heavy inspiration from gothic horror and folklore, specifically focusing on the cycle of the moon and the werewolf transformations central to the plane of Innistrad. This card represents a common red-aligned creature designed to mechanically demonstrate the set's daybound and nightbound keyword mechanics, where the card transforms based on the number of spells cast during the previous turn.

The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the transformation from a menacing human brawler into a ferocious werewolf. The visual design emphasizes the gritty, tavern-based atmosphere of the setting, contrasting the Ruffian’s human form with the Smasher’s heightened, savage physiology. Upon its release, the card was integrated into the limited environment of the set, where its ability to grow in power during the night phase made it a staple for aggressive red decks.
