Provenance

Where it came from

Tears of Rage was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion, the second set in the Mirrodin block for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced the indestructible mechanic, centering on a metallic artificial plane where artifacts dominated the narrative and gameplay. The card reflects the set's high-risk, high-reward design philosophy, encouraging players to commit their creatures to a powerful, temporary surge of strength that ends in a devastating sacrifice.

The artwork was commissioned from longtime Magic contributor Pete Venters, who aimed to visualize the volatile, overflowing emotion suggested by the card's name. Venters utilized his established aesthetic of high-fantasy dynamism to capture the raw, destructive energy of the spell. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for aggressive red decks, valued primarily for its ability to punish opponents when the player has a wide board of creatures.
