Provenance

Where it came from

Tempest Efreet was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was notable for introducing the concept of multi-colored cards to the game, significantly deepening the strategic complexity of deck construction. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the expansion aimed to provide players with a more mythic and character-driven experience, moving away from the generic tropes of standard high fantasy.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prominent artist in early Magic sets known for his lyrical and elegant style. His design for the Efreet captures the chaotic, fiery nature of the creature, fitting perfectly within the high-stakes, experimental atmosphere of the Legends set. While the card is often cited by collectors for its specific mechanical function involving coin flipping, its historical value remains tied to its status as a quintessential piece of early 1990s trading card design.
