Temporal Fissure

Temporal Fissure was originally printed in the 2002 Scourge expansion of Magic: The Gathering. It emerged during a period when the game designers were experimenting with 'storm,' a high-risk mechanic that rewarded players for casting multiple spells in a single turn. By allowing a player to return a number of nonland permanents to their owner's hands equal to the storm count, the card became a defining piece of combo decks, as it could effectively reset the opponent's board state to secure a victory.

The version from Duel Decks: Mind vs. Might, released in 2017, features updated frame aesthetics consistent with modern card design. The illustration, created by artist Dave Dorman, depicts a swirling, chaotic rift in reality that captures the overwhelming power of the storm mechanic. While the card is often remembered for the frustration it caused in competitive play due to its ability to create non-interactive game states, it remains a notable example of the complex interactions that defined early 2000s gameplay.
