Where it came from
Temur Charger was released in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was inspired by the themes of warlords and clans, focusing on the five factions of the plane of Tarkir. This particular card represents the Temur Frontier, a clan characterized by its survivalist nature and connection to the harsh, frozen wilderness, emphasizing the set's mechanical identity of 'ferocious' abilities triggered by high-power creatures.
The card illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who was tasked with capturing the rugged, primal aesthetic of the Temur clan. Ejsing's design focuses on the synergy between the rider and their mount, utilizing a color palette of icy blues and earthy tones to reflect the clan's environment. The card was well-received by players for its versatile morph mechanic, which provided strategic utility during the Limited format gameplay prevalent at the time.
