Where it came from
Tenderize is a character card from the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trading card set produced by Topps. This set was released at the height of the first major wave of TMNT popularity, following the success of the 1987 animated television series. Topps capitalized on the franchise's saturation of pop culture by creating a comprehensive series featuring character profiles, scene captures, and illustrations that mirrored the vibrant, chaotic aesthetic of the cartoon.
The design of the set focuses on the 'Mutant Mayhem' era, featuring bold borders and descriptive text intended to introduce younger audiences to both established heroes and the numerous secondary mutants that populated the show. Tenderize, a character often associated with the absurdity and variety of the TMNT villains, serves as a representative example of how Topps expanded the lore beyond the primary cast. The set was widely distributed in hobby shops and retail stores, becoming a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of 90s non-sports trading cards.
