Where it came from
Terminal Agony was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was specifically designed to introduce powerful, complex cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the standard Standard-legal release cycle. The card was crafted to function as a versatile removal spell, reflecting the set's emphasis on high-synergy mechanics and graveyard interaction.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who sought to capture the visceral, dark aesthetic typical of black-aligned removal effects in the game. By blending shadows with sharp, necrotic imagery, Lunter emphasizes the 'agony' depicted in the title. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but functional tool for Limited environments and thematic decks, lauded by players for its thematic consistency and clean, punchy mechanical design.
