Where it came from
Terror of Mount Velus was released in the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering in early 2020. This set returned players to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros, focusing on themes of the underworld, death, and the divine. The creature represents a terrifying dragon native to the volcanic peaks of the plane, designed to embody the raw, destructive power characteristic of the red mana color identity within the game's mechanics.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dramatic, high-contrast style to emphasize the dragon's fiery nature and imposing scale. The design team focused on creating a high-impact 'bomb' for the Limited format, granting the creature double strike and the ability to share that keyword with another creature. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its significant presence in aggressive red decks, serving as a powerful top-end finisher that demanded immediate removal from opponents.
